# Movie Review: Grease (1978)

I don’t know what to rate this. The older I get the less I like it, and the more I like the [sequel](https://boxd.it/1Zk8) (1982) instead. The sequel is intentionally goofy. It had a a [song about bowling](https://geo.music.apple.com/us/album/score-tonight-feat-lorna-luft-the-cast-of-grease-2/1440912840?i=1440913257&mt=1&app=music), two different, playful songs about getting laid ([one’s patriotic](https://geo.music.apple.com/us/album/do-it-for-our-country/1440912840?i=1440913270&mt=1&app=music), and [one is scientific(!)](https://geo.music.apple.com/us/album/reproduction/1440912840?i=1440913403&mt=1&app=music)), and you’ll never get [“Girl for All Seasons”](https://geo.music.apple.com/us/album/girl-for-all-seasons-feat-lorna-luft/1440912840?i=1440913264&mt=1&app=music&at=1001l33QX) or [“Who’s That Guy”](https://geo.music.apple.com/us/album/whos-that-guy/1440912840?i=1440913395&mt=1&app=music&at=1001l33QX) out of your head. Plus, I think of the “Beet Oven” joke to this day when I write out [Beethoven](https://geo.music.apple.com/us/artist/ludwig-van-beethoven/1130028?mt=1&app=music)’s name.

  
[Grease](https://amzn.to/31EFACk) (1978) is so earnest that it is problematic in parts—specifically in its rape jokes (*yikes*) and its overriding theme that you must change yourself for the person you love to earn love. I loved Grease as a little girl, *loved* it, I used to act out Sandy and Danny’s dance scenes with my Barbies. But now…in my late-40’s, I see past the joy and the hand-jive and the jumping on the bed to the bleakness and the grit. I still have love for it, but I might not ever watch it again.
